Robert White is a classically-trained violist, musician and recorder player based in Manchester. Currently a viola student at the RNCM under the tuition of Lucy Nolan, he is passionate about all forms of performance, and is particularly interested in playing for operas, in orchestras and chamber groups.
Initially Robert started out by learning violin. After a chance encounter with a viola in 2016 he became enchanted with the deeper, richer sound of the viola, and has never regretted his decision to change instruments. Robert continued his studies at Chetham’s School of Music Graham Oppenheimer (viola) and Chris Orton (recorder).
Robert is particularly interested in Baroque music. He is adept with the full range of recorders from Sopranino to Contrabass with which he has performed as a soloist and in ensembles of various sizes. At Chetham’s, he performed in the Early Music Series, ‘Baronial Baroque’, as a soloist and in consort, as well as at local venues and the Birmingham Early Music Festival.
Robert is also interested in arranging music. His arrangements include pieces for electric string quartet and recorder consort. His arrangement of one of Handel’s Concerto Grossi for recorder consort was arranged so the contrabass player had an interesting part. It received acclaim by recorder players John Turner, Sarah Bronnert and Colin Touchin who asked to publish the arrangement with Tomus Music.
If not performing or in the practice room, Robert can often be found making small items out of leather, knitting together chainmail, or attempting one of the many other crafts that has caught his interest.
